Occupational Therapist | Care Spine & Sports
Kayla Toscano, OTR/L, is an Occupational Therapist at Care Spine & Sports whose approach focuses on helping people regain the practical skills, confidence, and independence needed for everyday life. Her occupational therapy perspective considers not only an injury or limitation, but also how it affects a person’s ability to work, care for themselves, manage their home, participate in meaningful activities, and live independently
From Psychology to Occupational Therapy
Before entering occupational therapy, Kayla studied at Binghamton University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Education. This background provides a foundation for understanding the relationship between physical function, behavior, learning, motivation, and participation in everyday activities.
Kayla subsequently pursued professional training in occupational therapy at Seton Hall University. She completed her professional occupational therapy education in 2025 and obtained her OTR/L credential. During her occupational therapy education, she was recognized through Pi Theta Epsilon, the National Occupational Therapy Honor Society.
Upper-Extremity & Functional Rehabilitation
Within the multidisciplinary setting at Care Spine & Sports, Kayla’s occupational therapy role complements physical rehabilitation by placing additional emphasis on upper-extremity function and performance of everyday activities. Her clinical interests include rehabilitation involving the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, as well as weakness, reduced mobility, impaired coordination, and functional limitations following orthopedic injuries, surgery, motor vehicle accidents, or work-related injuries.
For patients preparing to return to employment, treatment can also focus on the physical and functional demands required to perform specific work activities safely and efficiently
Patient Education & Practical Solutions
Kayla believes rehabilitation should extend beyond the therapy appointment. Patient education is an important component of her approach. She helps patients understand how movement patterns, positioning, ergonomics, activity modification, pacing, and home exercises can influence their ability to perform daily activities.
A Distinct Role at Care Spine & Sports
As part of the multidisciplinary Care Spine & Sports team, Kayla contributes the distinct occupational therapy perspective of participation and function – helping patients translate improvements in strength, mobility, coordination, and endurance into greater independence in the activities that make up their daily lives.
